As for game itself Toledo got into the lane way too easy and from there either made shots or facilitated other open looks. thier offense was extremely efficient. Kent was a little to quick (not sure if nervous) on offense.

Freshmen big Tyler has great potential. IMO she needs more than 13 mins a game. Kent program definitely headed in the right direction.

Pretty much agree. I’m sure Kent was tight and it really affected Batsch. The way she has been playing really has made a difference. You're right about Tyler but Morris is helping too. She has a deadly 8 to 10 foot jumper. All three are upgrades over last year. Worried that Hauser hurt her knee a bit in the previous game. She looks okay but had a pretty good wrap on the knee. Her points and assists are down since. Not a big sample size but need to keep an eye on it.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
Beat Akron 69-60 in an ok performance. Got back to normal in the sense that Batsch, Shumate and Hauser led our scoring with 18, 14 and 12.
Each team had 22 field goals with 8 threes. Kent won it at the line with 17-19 vs. Akrons 8-12. Our five starters (the starter at center is Morris/Tyler) played about 35 minutes each. Unusually high (sending a message because of the poor Toledo performance?) since they couldn’t shake the Zips. Zips outrebounded us 33-25. After home game with EMU we play at 5-0 Ball St and 4-2 Bowling Green. We will know a lot more after those two.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
Batsch and Shumate combined for 24 of KSU's 40 points in the second half. In the locker room, Starkey said he told Batsch: "If you had half as much confidence in yourself as everybody else in this room does in you, you're an all-conference player."

She had 18 points, including four 3-pointers, two assists and five steals.

6-3 forward Bridget Dunn scored just five points but keyed a defense that held Akron's Reagan Bass in check. Bass had led the conference in rebounding (11.5) and was second in scoring (18.8).

Against Kent, she went 6-of-16, scored 15 points and had six rebounds.

KSU blocked five shots and outscored Akron 19-3 on fast breaks.

Game story is on the blog at htttp://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
Batsch had 20 most of them in the second half, Hauser and Shumate 13 and Morris 10 to beat a tough EMU team 66-57. EMU outrebounded us 43-38 and held us to 45 points through 3 quarters. We (or should I say Batsch) finally broke through and outscored them 21-14 in the 4th. Dunn missed all 5 threes and only scored 2 on free throws. However she got 11 rebounds and kept us close on that stat. The bench only played 29 minutes tonight as we really had to battle for this one. Next up at 4-3 BG at BG. Some bad news is Abby Ogle took a Joe Lewis left hook and left the game with what looked like a concussion. Probably will be out for a couple of weeks.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
Batsch had 12 points in the third quarter and scored KSU's last 10 points of the period. Her 20 for the game was a career-high.

Some nice quotes from her ("I play better angry") and point guard Corynne Hauser ("Every time Jenna's able to go on a run by herself, it gets the whole team going") are on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Bowling Green, whom Kent State plays on the road at 4 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+, is 4-3 after losing to Buffalo 82-72 on Wednesday. BG and Buffalo are tied for fourth in the conference, two games behind Kent State. Bowling Green hasn't been the same since Lexi Fleming, its leading scorer, went down with a knee injury before Christmas. Still, the Falcons are 5-1 at home.

Next Wednesday KSU travels to first-place Ball State, which is 7-0 in the MAC, 17-2 overall and has won 11 in a row.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
The women beat Bowling Green 82-74 on the road to run their record to 7-1 in the MAC.

That's KSU's best start since 2001-02, in the heart of the Dawn Zerman-Julie Studer years, when the Flashes won four straight MAC titles.

The Flashes are 13-5 overall and tied with Toledo for second place in the league. The Rockets just escaped a home upset by Buffalo Saturday, winning 67-63.

In first place at 8-0 and 18-2 overall is Ball State, which hosts KSU at 7 p.m. Wednesday on ESPN+.

After getting into foul trouble in the first half, Katie Shumate scored 23 points in the second to lead the Flashes. Jenna Batsch had 16 and is averaging 17.2 over her last five games. Janae Tyler had 14 points and six rebounds. She helped lead KSU down the stretch after starting post Mikala Morris was injured in the fourth quarter. It's unclear whether Morris will be able to play against Ball State.

Starting point guard Corynne Hauser injured a knee but still played 31 minutes. Much of the time she played wing as backup point Dionna Gray ran the offense. Gray had six assists to one turnover and scored seven points.

The victory was Starkey's 300th in his career at Kent State and Division II Lenoir-Ryne in North Carolina. It was his 135th win at Kent State, which ties him with Laurel Wartluft for second among women's coaches. First place is Bob Lindsay's 418 over 23 seasons.

The Flashes play at first-place Ball State at 6:30 Wednesday on ESPN+.

Ball State is 18-2 and third in the latest Mid-Major Top 25. The Cardinals are 8-0 in the MAC and a game ahead of Kent State and Toledo.

Kent State is 7-1 in the conference, its best MAC start in 24 years, and 13-5 overall.

Full preview, including MAC standings and statistical rankings, is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
The women had one of the worst nights of shooting I've ever seen and lost at first-place Ball State 57-46.

The Flashes missed their first 15 three-point shots. They finally made four in the fourth quarter, but the game was out of reach.

Worse, KSU missed 13 foul shots. They made only four. Yes, four.

This is a team that had been making 73% of its free throws and 35% of its 3-pointers.

Katie Shumate was the team's only real scorer with 22 points, her second straight 20-point game.

Grad transfer Mikala Morris, who had started every game before Wednesday, sat out with a leg injury. Freshman Janae Tyler and sophomore Tatiana Thomas defended and rebounded their hearts out to replace her. Each had six points and eight rebounds.

No one else had more than five points.

Ball State, which is a very good team, swept the first half of the MAC season and is 9-0, 19-2 overall. Kent State is 7-2 and 13-6 and in third place. Toledo is second at 8-1.

Ugh. Just making 73% of our free throws would have made it only a 3
point loss. Also might it be time to take the green light away from Dunn.
She has lost her shot and with her mechanics being not the best I’m afraid she might not get it back anytime soon.

Dunn has averaged a little bit ver four shots a game over the last five games. So she may have gotten the word. Her defense and rebounding, however, has been a major asset.

Game canceled “as Central Michigan does not have enough available student-athletes. The game will not be rescheduled”?!? Fifteen scholarships plus walk-ons, how are these schools not having enough players to compete?

CMU website says they had seven players in uniform in Saturday's 64-59 win over Miami. One played with a severe cold; another was hurt in the fourth quarter.

I think they have to have seven available to play.

CMU lists 14 people on its roster.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
I just posted the below on the MAC board, to recount how CMU got down to under 7.

CMU went into the year with only 12 players, but 2 of those fell off the roster before play even started. They decided to roll with 10. Fairly early in the year they lost 2 to serious injuries who have not returned to play so far. They added a volleyball walk-on to get back up to 9, but in recent weeks lost a couple more to injuries of unknown seriousness. Played with 7 against Miami, but another player got hurt during that game, leaving 6. NCAA rules say you have to dress at least 7.

CMU is not the only team to go through this so far this year. For example, TCU started with 14 players but had to forfeit 2 games after losing 8 to injury. They recently added 4 walk-ons to the team so that they could continue playing games.

I read about a week ago that the same thing happened to a women's college team in Texas, I believe it was.

The rule about 7 healthy players must be somewhat new. I remember Kent playing games with 6. Anyway this is the same problem we talked about on another thread. Heck look at the Cavs. They just get Garland and Mobley back and before they play 3 games (limited minutes) Allen goes down. It just is a continuous loop. Never ends.

I don't know about women's rules, but I believe the rule in men' is still that you can start a game with only 4 players.

Women won 70-57 in a somewhat ugly game. Batsch had 25 to carry us. Hauser went down due to her knee again and it looked a lot worse than the other 2 times. It was accompanied with an audible scream. She came back to the bench without a limp but let’s say she didn’t have a bounce in her step. I suspect she’ll miss some time. Our back up Gray is okay but not as good as Hauser. I’d doubt will see Hauser Saturday against Old Dominion.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
Batsch's 25 was a career-high, and she equaled her career-highs in 3-pointers made (four) and blocked shots (three). She's having an amazing year for someone who played such limited minutes her first two years here.

With starting forward Mikala Morris still out, the Flashes got good performances from freshman Janae Tyler (10 points, five rebounds) and sophomore Tatiana Thomas (8 points, 5 rebounds).

The Flashes held Kaitlyn Zarycki, the MAC's second-leading scorer to eight points, 10 below her average. She also committed eight turnovers.

Next is a 1 p.m. Saturday game against Old Dominion as part of the MAC-Sun Belt challenge. ODU is 16-6 and the best defensive team in the Sun Belt. Kent is among the best defensive teams in the MAC. The game is on ESPN+.

Full story on the Western Michigan game is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Had to leave the game early today. We were leading 56-46 with a minute to go in the 3rd Quarter. I take no responsibility for what happened afterward. I would guess giving up 46 points in 28/29 minutes and then 36 points in 11/12 minutes would have a lot to do with it. Old Dominion 82, Kent 76.

RE: Women's basketball 2023-24
Old Dominion blitzed Kent State 31-19 in the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs shot 55%, outrebounded KSU 13-5 and turned up defensive pressure in the quarter.

For the game, ODU scored 23 points off of 18 Kent State turnovers. KSU scored 12 off Old Dominion's 14 turnovers. That edge is twice the margin of victory.

The Flashes were playing without starting point Corynne Hauser, who is likely out for the season after injuring a knee in KSU's victory over Western Michigan on Wednesday.

Hauser was replaced by Dionna Gray, a former West Virginia high school player of the year, who made her first college start and had 10 points, three assists and one turnover. Backup Elena Maier had three assists and no turnovers. She had averaged just six minutes a game in two seasons, mostly in mop-up action.

Shumate led all scorers with 26 points and had 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double and fourth 20-point game of the season. Shumate is now eighth all-time for Kent State in points (1,671) and rebounds (748).

Old Dominion is now 17-6 on the season; Kent State is 14-7.

The game matched the third-place teams in the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt Conference as part of the first MAC-SBC Challenge. MAC teams won six of 11 games Saturday, all of which were played on MAC home courts. First-place Ball State plays first-place James Madison on Sunday. In the first round of the Challenge, Sun Belt teams won 9-of-12, all on Sun Belt courts.
